The Generation Project lives on!!

The Generations Project will have another chance of showing its stuff this Saturday, the 29th of March, when the project takes part in Virginia’s Festival of the Book. We are very happy and honored to have been invited to take part in this event. Many thanks to the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities who organizes Festival of the Book (especially Jesse Dukes), and The Bridge Progressive Arts Initiative (especially Greg Kelly). The Generations Project will exhibit at the Charlottesville Community Design Center.

More notably, three of the students will take part in a panel discussion moderated by author Nell Casey, (An Uncertain Inheritance: Writers on Caring for Family). We hope you can join us at this event.

Success at the opening!

The opening night of The Generations Project was a huge success! It turned out to be the biggest opening The Bridge has ever had. Some people said they couldn’t get in the door because is was so packed. I would estimate close to 200 people were there. Many thanks to the friends and family, and strangers who showed up.

The student’s work was truly incredible. Most people were amazed that this was a high school project. It was really wonderful to have four of the seniors attend the opening. I sat close to one of the seniors as her audio slideshow was playing, and seeing the look on her face and she watched the story was truly moving. I think the seniors felt honored to be part of the project and have their noteworthy lives shared with so many in the community.

At the beginning of the project I wrote in one of the proposals that The Gengerations Project would be a project “from the community and for the community”. On Friday night when I was looking around at all the various people there, young and old, I realized that we might have lived up to that title of “from the community and for the community.” It’s very rare that the arts brings together such an intergenerational crowd.

Some exciting news. The project may be travelling to the Festival of the Book, here in Charlottesville, next month. We are very excited for this potential opportunity and will keep you all informed as we confirm details along the way.

First Saturday editing session.

Casey is editing the photos for the final exhibit.

Last Saturday was the first big editing session where we reviewed all the photographs, selected the top 8 for the exhibit, and used photoshop for the minor edits. The crew was good enough to start at 9am–an ungodly hour on a Saturday morning! The photos are looking very good! The exhibit is going to be impressive. Please come out!

Who’s your president?

The Saturday session went very well. The prints were sent to Stubblefield Photo Lab, and we should receive them by Friday. The students are now preparing their final images for the audio slideshows and editing their audio interviews. This coming Saturday will be spent constructing the audio stories and producing the audio slideshows in Soundslides.

We have some excellent news! Stubblefield Photo, a local photograph printing shop, has agreed to support the Generations Project by printing the exhibit for free. We are most thankful for their generosity. It’s bound to be a great exhibit.

Last week we completed workshop #6. The students are now shaping their stories and focusing on the images and audio specific to their audio slideshows. Workshop #7 meets tonight, then there are just two Saturday editing sessions in January before the exhibit.

A Generations update

It’s been awhile since the last update, but there has been a lot of progress. We are actually coming up to our sixth editing session next week, and the seventh will take us up to the end of the student-senior pairing. It’s been very fun to review everyone’s work at the meetings. Thanks to Paige for bringing food and hot chocolate to one session!

I’ve posted some photographs from the student’s work so far. There are a good number of photos, but I’m only going to share a sample. The students are still forming their stories, determining what aspects of the senior’s life to focus on. It’s a difficult process and it requires lots of patience with their senior partners.

Here is a good portfolio from Celine Clanet, a French photography who has a series of work focusing on senior citizens. I really like how she portrays the medium, small, and wide compositions. A portrait, a detail, and a roomscape. Unfortunately, the text is in French, but if you can translate it for me, please do!

workshop #2

Last week the Generations Project workshop was visited by Jesse Dukes of Within Good Reason, a radio show supported by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities. You can listen to some of Jesse’s freelance radio stories here and here. Jesse is helping us out with audio recording tutorials, and by providing some audio recorders for the student’s use.

We quickly practiced using the recorders by staging “mock interviews”. Next week we will be taking the next step by uploading the recordings to a computer and doing more sessions with each student’s individual recorder.

The time was also spent talking about the student’s first experiences with thier senior friends. Some had not had the chance to meet with their senior friend, while others had akward, but ultimately positive first introductions. Workshop #3 should be great! We’ll have stories to tell and photos to share.

And we’re off!
Tuesday, September 18th marked the first day of The Generations Project. All six students came to attend the orientation night. We were joined by Casey Templeton, and Greg Kelly of The Bridge-PAI. It was an evening spent getting to know one another, watching audio slide shows and talking over the project details. The students will spend the first week meeting with their senior friend, without the use of camera or audio recorder.

Wednesday the 26th is our next meeting. We will have a brief visit from Jesse Dukes, who works for With Good Reason–a radio show sponsored by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities. Jesse is a freelance radio producer who is helping by providing audio recorders and offering his knowledge in the world of audio recording.
